Church History

Early in 1959, the church at Greater Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church was scattered abroad as sheep without a shepherd. Sis. S. Jennings made the suggestion that a prayer band be organized and we went from home to home each week, singing, praying, and teaching God's word. In the early fall of 1959, Sis. Jennings suggested that this church should be organized. The Lord gave Deacon J.M. Pierott a vision of a church and with a little better than $300 divided between two groups, we began to work. A building was rented to us for $20 a month and was converted into a house that resembled a church building. On Sunday, November 8, 1959, Christian Fellowship Baptist Church was organized. Rev. H.Y. Young was elected as Pastor; Deacon J.M. Pierrot and Deacon L. L. Mackey were Deacons. Bros. Willie Jennings, Johnnie Howard, and James Harris were appointed trustees.

“ A church is a hospital for sinners, not a museum for saints. For where God built a church, there the Devil would also build a chapel.”

Deacon J.M. Pierott was church treasurer; Bro. L.L. Mackey, church clerk; and Sis. G.L. Howard, church secretary. Bro. S. Lewis, Bro. J. Harris, and Sis. L. L. Mackey selected the name Christian Fellowship Baptist Church. The church was organized by Rev. W. Van Milligan and Rev. G.H. Shedd. The membership put forth an effort to raise finances to meet its obligations and in 1961 the present building was started at 2511 Schweikhardt.

Due to the willing work of the men of the church, the building was built at a low cost of less than $11,000. This was done on pay as you go basis; and the members marched in, in 1962. The first piano and pulpit bible were given to the church by Bro. & Sis. W. Jennings. Collection tables were donated by Bro. & Sis. J.M. Pierott, and the pulpit was built and donated by Bro. L.L. Mackey.

In May, 1960, Rev. H.Y. Young resigned as Pastor and the Deacons with help of the Holy Spirit carried on the services. The Lord sent Rev. A. Smith to us to carry out until a pastor would be sent from God. Then in August 1960, the mind and the feet of Rev. S.H. Brown in our direction. Rev. Brown, a member of Fourth Missionary Baptist Church accepted the pastorage of Christian Fellowship. The Deacons recognized him as being the man that we were praying for and he was appointed by the Deacon Board to become pastor. Under his leadership the church grew rapidly. The church was blessed with a dynamic humble servant of God.

The Lord saw fit to take our devoted and loving pastor, S.H. Brown in 1981. Thanks to God's grace and mercy, the flock did not scatter. We were blessed to have different ministers to carry on until God sent us Rev. L.D. Thomlinson Sr. In recent years our faithful and God-fearing First Lady Vanessa Thomlinson was anointed and appointed as our Co-Pastor and God has truly blessed us through her teaching and preaching.

The church name was changed from Christian Fellowship Baptist Church to Greater Christian Fellowship Missionary Baptist Church on February 3, 1987. With the continued blessings of God and the help of the Holy Spirit we look forward to our church's continued growth. We can do all things through Christ Jesus who strengthens us.
